So, apparently Friday is international Grenache day and some friends decided to crack a few bottles early. Veille Julienne felt a little long in the tooth, but ‘98s don’t generally quite live up to the hype. The Horsepower (one of Christophe Baron’s projects) is probably one of the best Washington reds I’ve had in recent memory; think the intensity and power of young VT La Crau, with none of the much-too-muchness that accompanies most ambitious domestic Grenaches. Really promising and a further argument for Rhône varieties in WA (or Oregon, since the vineyard is in the stones). Pegau was a big boy, and definitely the most black fruited of the bunch. I always love the Brett expression on these wines, perfectly balanced with the fruit intensity. Grenache is a grape variety I struggled to love for quite some time, but these all definitely make a great case for why I love it now...
