Aosta Valley

This magical region makes less wine than any other in Italy… but what wines! A tiny, civilized, stunningly beautiful patchwork of mountains, meadows and small fields, it is responsible for perhaps 100,000 cases of wine a year. Puglia produces a thousand times as much!

While French Savoie produces ¾ white wine, as you would expect for an Alpine region, Aosta’s wines are almost 90% red. There are tiny quantities of local whites right next to the tunnel under Mont Blanc. At the border with Piedmont, Donnas of course grows Nebbiolo, a ghostly version of the substantial wines of Barolo.

In the middle of the region, around the capital city of the same name, there is a wide range of fairly light-bodied, exuberantly aromatic and mouth-watering reds. The biggest name is Torrette. Centered in the hamlets of Sarre and La Crete, the local, fine “Petit Rouge” variety is at least 70% of Torrette, with other unique local varietals such as Fumin, Neyret and Vien de Nus, sometimes with “imported” grapes like Dolcetto and Pinot Noir. The other red wine we import is Cornalin, a rare and even more distinctive varietal offering dark color, robust tannins and an appetizing bitterness.

Our offerings are rounded out with white wines. Traminer Aromatico is the local name for Gewurztraminer. The version here is less powerfully perfumy and less weighty than most Alsace versions, a savory and beautifully balanced offering. Our line is rounded out with Blanc Perdrix, a magnum of refreshingly juicy pleasure blended from an unlikely but winning combination of Muller-Thurgau and an obscure grape named Chardonnay, with drops of Pinot Gris or Grigio and some of the local, also unperfumed Muscat.
